Adventure is not just going to football practice or dance class.  It is not just going to school or work. It is not doing the things we’ve done before in the way we’ve done them before. Adventure is when we take the opportunity to try some thing new that we haven’t done before.

When you stand on a log, a metre off the ground and then fall backwards into your team’s waiting arms for the first time that is an adventure.  When you step into a boat for the first time that is an adventure. Adventure comes from not knowing  exactly what will happen next. Adventure comes from taking a risk.

The alternative is not to risk anything and to stick with what we know to be safe and certain. Bear Grylls, a modern day adventurer says this, “If you risk nothing you gain nothing”.

The downside to taking a risk is failure, of looking foolish, so maybe it is better to stick to what we know?  However, Winston Churchill said “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm” It is through learning from the things that go wrong that we grow into stronger people better able to deal with the surprises that life throws at us.

Life becomes an adventure when we take the opportunities that present themselves to us and when we seek out new challenges. A football practice can be an adventure when we try something new, when we work that bit harder.  A dance class can be an adventure when we give more of ourselves and are prepared to learn a new technique. Even going to school or work doesn’t need to be dull; think about the new things to learn and keep working at the problems even if the first (or second or third time) result in failure.

The Bible puts it like this:

We also rejoice in our failures, knowing that failure brings about perseverance; and perseverance strengthens our character; and character leads to hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. Romans 5:3-5

A life full of adventure is one lived to the full.  Come and enjoy the adventure with us.
